Open book Toronto!
To say that Open Book Toronto is the definitive website for anything remotely Torontonian and Literary is to say that air is the definitive requirement for human survival. It’s got articles, interviews, links to other awesome literary sites and more importantly a whole slew of events to check out.
Toronto Reading Series & Small Presses
This one I mentioned before, but for those who missed it Livewords (a very respectable reading series) managed to draw in the bulk of the organizers of reading series to join them for a fifth anniversary. The link is old, where some reading series not listed, but it’s a good starting point.
Fun fact: Reading series are not just populated by the childless and single. A good many are just stuffed with writers well into their game, readers and editors varying in age.
For a short introduction to small presses in Toronto
• Coach House Books
• Mansfield Press
• Quattro Books
• Insomniac Press
• Tightrope Books
• ECW Press
• House of Anansi
• Chizine Publications
Facebook Events
One of best pieces of advice my creative writing professor gave me was participate in Toronto’s literary scene. Go to events, buy books, meet authors, have fun. Unfortunately he didn’t give me anything beyond inviting the class to events he was going to which didn’t happen as frequently as I would like, so I checked up his Facebook profile, and joined all the groups that had literary, or press, or reading, or books in its name.
As much hate Facebook gets for it’s in-your-face adverts and lack of privacy; I found it a great way to keep tabs on events. Most of the small presses, reading series, etc will send out mass invites in order to spread the love and get everyone on board. So if you use Facebook and are interested, friend me on Facebook and check out my groups.
p.s. having friends in the literary world is also great because they will invite you to events and so on.
If your pen runs dry, get a new one.
(Still working on it
